I have a 56k modem , why don't I get 56k Connections?

Transmission and reception speed are a relative variable depending upon the modem, the phone lines, and the computer.

Another important factor is the distance from your home to the Phone Company Central Office. Twisted pair copper wiring is used between your home and the Central Office. From the CO inwards the line is usually Fiber Optic, therefore some Internet speed problems can be attributed to the length and condition of these copper wires.

Multiple analog/digital conversions may be between you and your ISP.

Additional factors may include the speed of your CPU,serial port or serial card, and the amount of RAM you have.

There are also four different types of 56K modems, X2 and KFlex, and X2/V.90 and KFlex/V.90. The X2 and the KFlex are not compatible with each other. But, the X2/V.90 and the KFlex/V.90 are!. Cavalier is V.90 compatible. However, your modem must be V.90 to take advantage of this fact. A NON-V.90 56K modem has a maximum limit of 33.6K

How do I disable Call Waiting?

In the phone number field of your Internet Connection, put a *70, (Thats star 70 comma) in front of the phone number.

Top

I'm surfing along and all of a sudden my modem disconnects, what happened?

There are Several factors involved which can cause disconnects.

  • Call waiting may not be turned off. See disabling call waiting for more assistance.
  • Your phone cord from your modem to the wall may be old or too long. This cord should be no longer than 8-10 feet and relatively new and of good quality. Many modems come with a phone cord included, this cord may be of low quality.
  • There should be no other equipment between the modem and the wall jack.
  • For example, plug your phone or fax machine into the modem, do not use a line splitter or multijack.
  • You may have a "WinModem". A winmodem relies on your computers main CPU for its processing and therefore places a high load on your computer which can slow it down and lead to dropped connections.
  • Your monitor is set to too high of a resolution. A very large display or color depth can place a very high load on your graphics card or CPU, and drop your connection.
  • You may have an inordinate amount of line noise or static. This will also drop a connection.
  • Someone picked up a phone and disconnected you.

What is a multiple analog/digital conversion?

When you call an ISP it goes through copper wires to the phone company central office where it is converted from an analog to digital signal.

  • For 56K connections to work there can be only one A/D conversion inline.
  • Otherwise your maximum speed is V.34 (33.6K).
  • Many connections with more than one A/D conversion will connect in a range from 26.4K to 28.8K.
  • Most Cavalier Telephone/ISP customers will have only one A/D conversion inline.
